RURAL PROGRESS
 <kirkwall_harbour.jpg>
Thanks to the collaborative work done between SWAP and the colleges and universities in the north of Scotland, SWAP East now has 20% of its enrolments coming from Moray, Aberdeenshire and the Highlands and Islands, with students attending classes at many different campuses run by North East Scotland College, Shetland College, Moray College, North, West & Hebrides College and Argyll College. Development of the online programmes has further helped students from more rural areas, where attending a college just isn’t possible.  We’re delighted to have students from all corners of the country now getting this opportunity to access higher education.

The online courses at UHI-Perth have been especially helpful. On both the Access to Humanities and Access to Health and Life Sciences courses, there are students all over the country, creating opportunities that previously did not exist. As former Access to Humanities student, Sarah, who is now studying Law at Abertay told us:

''I am literally living a dream that I thought was never going to come to fruition. It's amazing.''

Both courses have now had many students successfully making the transition to university and, having been such a success, will remain on offer to new studnets for the forseeable future.

Joe Burman, Subject Leader for Science, Engineering and Aviation at UHI-Perth, said:

"Three years in, our SWAP program is proving its worth with flexible learning options. Students from all over Scotland are benefiting from online access and on-campus sessions, making education fit around their lives. It's about practicality, accessibility, and opening doors to new opportunities. We’ve had single parents, part time workers, and people looking for a career change all complete the course with us, and our progressors have gone on to degree courses ranging from Oral Health Science to Geology, across Scotland’s most prestigious universities."

Following in the footsteps of UHI-Perth, it is anticipated that more online SWAP programmes will be on offer at our other partner colleges, which is good news for many prospective SWAP students around the country.
