Access to Nursing

 <female_nurse2.jpg> The Access to Nursing programme is offered at a number of partner colleges throughout the West of Scotland. Progression from these programmes is to one of our university partners on the list below:

     * Glasgow Caledonian University
     * University of Stirling
     * University of the West of Scotland

During your SWAP year, if you haven't already, you will need to undertake a bit of research into the branch of nursing you would prefer. You may choose only one branch, and you are advised to focus your application on a single branch rather than attempt to straddle the line between two. The branches you may consider are:  <nurse_male.png>

  • Adult Nursing
  • Mental Health Nursing
  • Learning Disabilities Nursing
  • Child Nursing

While you do not require to have any experience in the care sector prior to applying for the SWAP programme, to be competitive when it comes to university applications and interviews, you would do well to spend some time working or volunteering in a care setting.

SWAP does not offer direct progression to Midwifery.

If you are seeking a career as a midwife, you should consult with the relevant universities' admissions officers regarding the best route for you, given your current qualifications.

If you have no current qualifications and if you are recommended to pursue an HNC (e.g. in Care and Administrative Practice), then you may apply to the SWAP Access to Nursing, successful completion of which would permit progression to HNC/D programmes in our partner colleges.
